What's better? Fat-Free or High- fat ice cream?
<< Back

BY JOHN ERICKSON

A weekend cheat meal for me is usually a slice of pizza or two or three and I have ice cream for dessert. I choose either Ben & Jerry's® Pistachio-pistachio flavor or Häagen-Dazs® Butter pecan.

My 40/30/30 eating religion considers regular ice cream healthier than the fat-free or reduced-fat versions because I am mainly focused on how the food effects the biochemistry of my body. The insulin response is much greater after eating a high carbohydrate fat-free frozen yogurt, sherbert or anything else that's all carbohydrate when compared to something that has a carbohydrate/fat mixture.

Ben & Jerry's® Pistachio-pistachio
Ben & Jerry's® Pistachio-pistachio has a short ingredient list.
Pistachios are a healthy fat and they also use coconut oil.
Although coconut oil is a saturated fat, my 40/30/30 religion does not see a problem with coconut oil because coconut oil is low in omega-6 fat.

Ingredients: Cream, Skim Milk, Liquid Sugar, Water, Pistachios, Egg Yolks, Natural Flavor, Coconut Oil, Guar Gum, Salt, Carrageenan.

Häagen-Dazs® Butter Pecan
Häagen-Dazs® Butter Pecan has nuts as an ingredient, and the ingredient list is short.
They also use coconut oil which is a neutral fat in terms of their effect on hormones.
I don't like the corn syrup but whatever...it's a cheat meal.

Ingredients: Cream, Skim Milk (Lactose Reduced), Sugar, Pecans (Roasted in Coconut Oil, Butter, Salt), Egg Yolks, Corn Syrup, Natural Vanilla, Salt.
